HOW TO SHOP ANY SALE LIKE A PRO

Well, that’s it and that’s all, folks. The Kmart Era in St. Croix has come to a quiet end.

Like many of you, before the Sunny Isles location permanently closed recently, I stopped in to see what sale items might catch my eye and that I actually needed in my wardrobe. You know how we get when there’s a sale—we turn into zombies and start buying things we don’t need and probably will never use.

That said, there’s an art to shopping a sale. If you really want to stretch those dollars and come away with things you’ll feel good about bringing home, you’ll have to do a little planning ahead. Plus, girl, when they’re handing out those “all sales are final” receipt, there’s no room for a do-over!

Follow these 4 easy steps to make shopping the next sale at your favorite store on-island, off-island or online, a breeze.

Go through your closet (or cupboards or makeup bag, etc.) and identify the things that are missing or need to be replenished. These are the things you should shop at the sale. Focus on the essentials first before stocking up on other things. There’s nothing worse than coming home with three white tees and you forgot you have several new ones already hanging in the closet, but what you really needed was some laundry detergent. A little planning goes a long way.

Purchase items that are in line with your personal aesthetic and style. Just because it’s $2 doesn’t mean you should buy it if it doesn’t fit your “vibe.” This is also true for sizing—if your shirt size is sold out, and you’re trying to convince yourself that you could fit a smaller size, don’t. You normally don’t wear Crocs, so no need to start wearing them now because they’re on sale. This helps you to avoid purchasing things you don’t need and won’t use.

Decide if the item is really a sale. Some sales are not real sales (that’s how I felt about the Kmart Closing Sale). Take some time to do a little comparison shopping before buying things “on sale.” You might be surprised that the same (or similar) item is more affordable elsewhere.

Have fun! Let’s be real, sales are fun. There’s that rush you get when you snag a cute pair of jeans or shoes for the cheap! But when fun-shopping the sale, before you purchase clothing or shoes think about what you already have in your closet that could go well with the item. Think about how you would style it in real life, so the purchase doesn’t end up being another thing you never wear.
