‘WE’VE SEEN ENOUGH. WE’VE HAD ENOUGH’: TAMPA INTL AIRPORT ANNOUNCES BAN ON PAJAMAS

Tampa International Airport (TPA) caused a stir on Feb. 26 when it took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce a ban on pajamas at its sunny South Florida hub.

According to the social media post, which referred to some travelers’ habit of wearing pajamas to catch flights as a “crisis”, this is the second time the airport has taken a stance against ultra-casual wear within its walls.

“After successfully banning Crocs and giving everyone the amazing opportunity to experience the world’s first Crocs-free airport, it’s time to take on an even larger crisis. Pajamas. At. The. Airport. In the middle of the day.”

Then, in a bid for travelers to help make the airport the world’s first “Croc-free AND pajama-free airport,” the post closed in dramatic flair: “Do your part. Say no to pajamas at TPA.”

LOL!

Obviously, based on the tone of the announcement, it’s clear the post is dripping with humor and sarcasm (see full announcement below). While it’s unlikely there would ever be a time when Tampa International, or any airport, would enforce a dress code, maybe the airport has had it with the pajama-wearing crowd rushing through its terminals and is offering a light-hearted nudge to encourage those travelers to put a little extra thought and care into how they show up in public, and for flights.

It’s important to note that some airports in very conservative or religious countries expect passengers to err on the side of modesty (i.e., covered shoulders, longer hemlines) when touching down in their borders. It’s out of respect for local culture and customs, more so than a dress code.

Some airlines do have dress codes, however, and passengers who don’t follow them can get booted from their flights. American Airlines doesn’t want barefoot passengers on its planes; Southwest says no to “lewd, obscene or patently offensive” clothing; and JetBlue wants passengers to cover the upper and lower parts of the torso (imagine that!).

The point? Plan ahead and put a little extra thought into outfit choices, whether you’re flying the friendly skies or meeting up with friends this weekend.
