BYE-BYE BONNET. 5 CUTER (AND CLASSIER) OPTIONS TO WEAR INSTEAD

No More Bonnets. 5 Cuter (and Classier) Options.

Emirah wears a graphic silk scarf atop a long braid. A silk scarf, when styled correctly, is the perfect alternative to the bonnet.

Remember when Mo’Nique called people out about wearing bonnets in public back in 2021? And if you’re like me, you’ll never understand why this look has so many of our little sisters, little cousins, and even some of our big aunties in a serious chokehold.

There are tons of other cuter (and classier) headwear options available when you need something quick and easy to throw on without sacrificing style. Dress Better on the Weekend has been out at local shops and surfing the internet to find some fabulous alternatives that will finally put the bonnet to bed.

Printed Silk Scarf

Emirah Alexander, a young professional in downtown Christiansted, has it right. This is exactly how you should style a scarf to be worn as part of an outfit. Scarves sometimes get a bad rap when it comes to wearing them in public, but it’s all about how they are styled. When tied closely fitted to the head with the remaining material left hanging loosely, you’ll achieve Emirah’s stylish look every time.

Pre-tied Scarves & Headwraps

If you don’t know how to tie a scarf stylishly, luckily there are lots of businesses that have already done it for you. Pre-tied scarves come in many prints and styles and are ready for you to pull on and go fashionably into the world.

Baseball/Trucker Hat

This is the easiest option and the one you’ll find me rocking most of the time. Nothing is quicker than throwing on a baseball cap or a trucker hat, whether you’re having a good hair day or a bad one. It’s a chic and sporty look that gets you ready to go outside in a hurry. Glide on a red lip or a gloss to complete your look.

Straw Hat/Fedora

Since DBOW is dedicated to supporting the real lives of people living in the Caribbean, wearing a straw hat with a sundress, jean shorts or linen set is a timeless look. Straw hats come in all shapes, sizes and styles, and can be worn from dawn to dusk.

Bucket Hat

I’ve recently started wearing bucket hats and not only do I find them practical (the structure really keeps the sun away), they are also be really stylish. If you have thicker hair and can’t quite get that baseball cap to fit, a cool bucket hat is your next best bet. They are great for days at the beach, a quick run to the grocery, or just taking a drive out East.

Fresh bucket hats are available locally at DPMNM in the Watapana Mall

We love a bonnet for the bedroom—they work really well there. Go ahead and give these options a try. We guarantee you’ll fall head over heels for them!
