THE DO’S AND DON’TS OF DOO-RAGS: A GUIDE FOR V.I. MEN
Ok, Kings, we’re going to cut right to the chase.
The purpose of the doo-rag is to help you get the best wavy hair pattern possible after a fresh fade. Like its baby sister the bonnet, the doo-rag has been showing up everywhere outside the house and we have some ideas about how to make it work for your life without sacrificing your cool.
Here are 6 Do’s and Don’ts for wearing your doo-rag in 2025:
DO…
Wear your doo-rag to bed at night. Nighttime is the perfect time for the silky-textured rag to work its magic, ensuring your desired results of a head full of shiny, wavy hair the next day.
Wear your doo-rag when doing chores or other projects around the home. If its waves you’re looking for, wearing the doo-rag for extended periods of time at home will give you the best results. Plus, you’ll keep your fresh cut free of sweat and dust when cutting the grass or cleaning out the garage.
Take your doo-rag off when leaving home—this includes grocery shopping, going to the car wash or grabbing a platter from 2 +2 on Saturday night. You’ve kept your hair covered for days, now is your chance to take that rag off and show off those waves!
DON’T…
Tie your doo-rag too tightly around your head. You risk having a visible indentation, sometimes for several days, across your forehead.
Wear your doo-rag outside your home. You should be proud of your newly formed waves, and we want to see them, too! But more importantly, the just-rolled-out-of-bed look has some of our eyes rolling. We love seeing you look your best self at all times.
Wear a hat after removing your doo-rag, unless the waves didn’t form as planned. Otherwise, you defeat the purpose of wearing the doo-rag.
BONUS: Don’t use your doo-rag as a long-term solution for a bad hair day or a bad haircut. There’s a baseball hat for that.
