Internationally acclaimed award-winning filmmaker and St. Croix native Johanna Bermudez-Ruiz invites the public to an encore screening of her film Sugar Pathways on Sunday, Aug., 3 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at J & W Bodega in the Richmond neighborhood of St. Croix.
The event, described as “an intimate evening under the stars that celebrates culture, cuisine, and community,” will also feature a three-course dinner prepared by Bermudez-Ruiz’s sister, award-winning Crucian-Rican Chef Wanda Bermudez-Belardo.
Sugar Pathways documents the mass migration of Puerto Ricans from the island of Vieques to St. Croix, which was triggered by the Great Depression of the 1930’s and the U.S. Navy takeover of most of Vieques’s territory in the 1940’s. It is narrated by Emmy award-winning actress Luna Lauren Velez.
According to event organizers, the menu will match the culture- and history-rich theme of the gathering and will feature dishes inspired by both Puerto Rican and Crucian cuisine, including saltfish Gundy, conch, Crucian stuffing, flan and more. The meal will be paired with select wines.
Sugar Pathways was first screened to a sold-out audience in February, its enthusiastic reception prompting Bermudez-Ruiz to bring it back for a second showing.
Tickets are $160 and attendees are asked to wear Island Chic attire. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.canebayfilms.com.
