Longtime communications and public affairs executive Jennifer Matarangas-King was sworn in as the USVI’s new Commissioner of Tourism on Jan. 15. Her choice of red power suit to take the oath of office signals a powerful message that offers a window into her corporate style and professional brand.

According to Emily Post’s Etiquette, the definitive authority on etiquette since 1922, red is a fascinating color with far-reaching meaning. For professional women like Commissioner Matarangas-King, wearing the attention-grabbing color can:

  • Communicate power

  • Convey confidence, vibrancy and leadership

Anyone that knows Commissioner Matarangas-King would agree that she embodies all of these traits, with humility and a true heart of service for her community included.

While Emily Post recommends women wear red sparingly in professional settings, cautioning to include the color as a statement piece or accessory to enhance an office look, wearing red for a ceremony or gala is very appropriate.

For her big day, the tourism czar opted for head-to-toe red, featuring a belted skirt suit with matching red kitten-heel slingbacks. She completed her ensemble with a black camisole and bold silver jewelry.

During the intimate ceremony, Governor Albert Bryan Jr. said of the newest member of his Cabinet: “Commissioner Matarangas-King understands both the business and the brand of the Virgin Islands. She will lead with energy, professionalism and purpose, and she will make sure the benefits of a strong tourism economy reach our people across St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.”

“I step into this role with gratitude and with an unwavering commitment to serve,” Commissioner Matarangas-King said. “Tourism must continue to deliver real opportunity for Virgin Islanders. We will elevate the visitor experience, strengthen our partnerships, support our local businesses, and tell the Virgin Islands story with authenticity, pride and excellence.”

And if her red suit is any indication, we are certain Commissioner Matarangas-King is at the center of elevating corporate style for powerful women in the USVI and beyond.
